There is a vitally important piece of the equation that continues to go missing in the culture of environmentalism and in society in general. That piece can be summed up in a single word: psyche (as in psychological). It's a word you don't hear much. And yet, in so many ways, it's the most important word in the world. What are the key elements of a resilient foundation for a sustainable and life-affirming society? One critical element, I believe, is the inner resilience that only work with the psyche can bring. The Great Turning: For decades Dharmagaians have warned of the dangers to civilization and the possibility of human extinction. They also have analyzed the causes of these problems as being rooted in the Western worldview, and have proposed solutions based on love for the Earth and concern for future generations. But the fundamental solution that all Dharmagaians agree upon is that a change in consciousness – a deep paradigm change, which many call the Great Turning – is necessary if our species is going to survive.
